Ardnamurchan — Almost An Island

Sonachan Hotel lies midway between Kilchoan village and Ardnamurchan Point on the main road B8007. We are 3 miles from the lighthouse, the most westerly point on the UK mainland.

By Car

There are three ways of travelling to the end of the Ardnamurchan peninsula by car:

  • Take the Corran Ferry across Loch Linnhe to Ardgour, and drive to Kilchoan via Strontian and Salen. You will find the Corran Ferry on the A82, midway between Fort William and Glencoe. If you are travelling north on the A82 it is just beyond Onich, about 20 minutes from Glencoe village after crossing the Ballachullish bridge. If you are travelling south on the A82, the ferry is about 20 minutes from Fort William. The Corran Ferry runs most days of the year, every half hour throughout the day. The first crossing is at 7.30 a.m. and the last at 9 p.m., all year round. No booking is required, just turn up at the slipway and join the queue. A single crossing costs £6.20 for a car and passengers. Pedal cycles are free.

  • From Fort William take the spectacular “Road to the Isles” towards Mallaig – the A830 through Glenfinnan – and turn left at Lochailort on the A850 to Salen. At Salen, turn right onto the B8007 and keep on the road to Kilchoan and Ardnamurchan lighthouse.

  • If you are travelling through Argyll and the islands, take the ferry fom Oban to Craignure, drive through the Isle of Mull and then take the ferry from the picturesque village of Tobermory to Kilchoan, to land on the westerly tip of the Ardnamurchan peninsula. For ferry information and timetables, consult Caledonian MacBrayne's Web site.
